Beauty Routines

My mom never went to work without applying lipstick, mascara, liquid eyeliner, blush and about half a can of Aqua Net on herself before leaving for work each day. She worked as a Veterinary Technician which required her to don scrubs, jeans and sensible white sneakers. That did not stop her from beautifying herself! I remember watching her get ready in the mornings and holding my breath as she doused her thick, long, curly-permed hair in Aqua Net. I would not label my mom as a super-girly-girl, just someone who wanted to look presentable, attractive and put together. The beauty routine habit definitely trickled down to the three sisters.

Family Picture
Check out my mom’s fabulous Farrah Fawcett feathered hair! This is obviously pre-Aqua Net days. I’m the baby and that cute girl in red is Marina.

Marina is the next person I observed working magic with cosmetics. Her style definitely transformed over the years! She possessed a large collection of Lip Smackers (Jessica and I took great pleasure in eating using them) during her preteen and early teen years. If you don’t remember or are unaware, Lip Smackers are lip balms that come in a wide variety of flavors–from Bubble Gum to Dr. Pepper. Both Marina and our mom owned large colorful Kaboodle boxes FULL of make-up. Perfect for two curious little girls to get their grubby hands all over! I can’t even begin to remember the countless occurrences of Jessica and I getting into the treasure troves of make-up, applying it horribly and later being found out and scolded for getting into things that did not belong to us.

Now I can’t leave the house without my daily beauty routine! I just feel…awkward and naked sans make-up. I need at least some eyeliner and mascara. I started selling Avon a few years ago so now my make-up bag is overstuffed with options. I know my sisters are sticklers about using facial cleanser and moisturizer daily. Jessica is known for sporting bold red lips and retro looking black eyeliner. Marina opts for more subtle yet glamorous make-up like peachy cheeks and lips.

My sisters even manage to be glam girls at Disneyland!

Now Marina is pregnant with our first baby between us sisters…and it’s a girl! I already know she is going to be a natural beauty because her mother certainly is! I wonder if she will get into Marina’s make-up bag and what shenanigans she’ll get into? I can’t wait to meet her and help guide her. I wonder whose style she’ll be similar to? If she ever needs beauty and fashion advice she has at least two aunts to turn to, we did get the best fashion advice from our mom–we’re more than happy to pass that on!

So ladies, how did you learn your beauty tricks? From your mom, sister, friends or magazines? Share with me in comments!

  1. My mom really isn’t and has never been into makeup and hair, but I love it! My best friend and I went crazy in high school with Sephora and Ulta. We had the Kevyn Aucoin book and would spend hours recreating the different makeup looks. Even today my favorite indulgence is urban decay eyeshadowa or flipping through the Avon book…as you know. Lol!
