It’s August — Hooray!

Usually on Friday I try to share a few blog posts I’m really into but as I mentioned last Friday I’ve been occupied by books (yay) and haven’t browsed many blogs this week. I just finished reading Honolulu by Alan Brennert and I really liked that story, I could not put the book down. My favorite genre is historical fiction and this really satisfied me. I can’t wait to read more of his books like Moloka’i.

I’m now reading The Land of Steady Habits by Ted Thompson. It’s a quick read about a retirement ready man who struggles with being happy or satisfied with his life and tells his wife he wants a divorce. They have two adult sons, grandchildren and a house that is not paid off yet. It goes through their love story, how they met in college and even goes into the wife’s point of view. Really interesting so far!

August is a really great month. First it starts off with one of best friend’s celebrating her son’s birthday and he’s five today! This weekend I’m stopping by my aunt’s house to meet a new baby cousin, our family is forever growing! Then on the fourth is my one year wedding anniversary, I’m really excited about that. We’ve been together for five years and now we’ve completed one year of marriage. Also the Ventura County Fair always starts in the beginning of August. It’s basically a tradition to go to the fair each year.

In mid-August I’m going to a cousin’s birthday party, she’s turning two! My generation of the family is just keeping things going! Then a series of more birthdays follow: my nephew, one of my really good friends, my birthday and then September we get a bunch of friend’s birthdays in a row to celebrate.

Also, now that it is August I have THREE months left to fundraise for the Susan G. Komen 3 Day. I want to be done fundraising by the end of October so I can focus on training in November. I still have a ways to go, I’ve raised $850 and need $1450 in order to participate in the walk. I really need to step up my fundraising game. I just ended a Mary Kay fundraiser where 25% of the profit was donated but I only got three orders, including mine.

Next, I’m selling spots on my t-shirt to carry names in honor or in memory of those touched by cancer. With a $5 donation I will wear their name on my shirt with pride as I complete the 60 mile trek in November. I’m still brainstorming a Halloween costume contest with a raffle for October. I also emailed a local popular pizza place about doing a fundraiser with them and my hair stylist is putting out a change box for me.

My last bit of news is that I am potentially returning to an old job next week. I was supposed to start Monday but we hit some speed bumps so now it looks like I’m starting Tuesday. Keeping my fingers crossed that it all works out and I can just roll up my sleeves and get right to work. In the meantime I do have a side job moderating an online community for a major video game console. I can’t exactly say the name but lets just say it rhymes with “me.” 😉

So happy August to you! Any fun things coming up for you as we enter the last stretch of summer?
