Resolutions

Happy New Year! One of my New Year’s Resolutions is to blog MORE! I changed the format of this blog to allow more flexibility in the topics of my posts. I will now blog about cooking/baking, home organizing, decorating, do it yourself projects, travel articles and opinion articles. I will continue to post funny memories since that’s what started this whole thing! My other resolutions are to organize the home creatively and exercise for 30 minutes or more a day. Recently I was introduced to a website called Pinterest. It’s opened my eyes to so many amazing blogs about home…

Devil Comes Out at Night…

The three of us sisters used to do mini slumber parties in the living room. Jessica and I shared a room and Marina had her own room so doing our own version of a slumber party was always great fun. We would bring all our blankets and pillows out and giggle the night away. Marina would mostly keep us laughing with jokes and stories. One night Jessica and I were particularly rowdy and Marina really wanted to start the slumbering portion of our slumber party. She decided the best way to get us snoozing was to scare us quiet. “Did you know the…

Taste Test

Ever wonder what a blade of grass might taste like? What about how a kibble of dog food might taste like? I was told that a blade of grass tastes like lettuce and that a kibble of dog food tastes like a peanut. I got a reality check on that when I tried these delicacies myself. Marina, good ol’ Marina. We were so gullible and trusted her so much. We believed her. She told us that grass and dog food were ok to eat. “Go ahead try it!” she said. We stood on the green tiled floors in the garage near the bag…

Roof Tops

Summer time reminds me of the summer days when we were left home alone and all the things we did to entertain ourselves. Marina, my older sister, was a great ring leader and always found something exciting for us to do. One of the most thrilling activities we had was jumping off the roof on our house in Oxnard. Yes, we jumped off the roof of our house. We would climb up from the back yard, the patio was covered with green fiberglass corrugated roofing held up by strong wooden posts. We climbed the wooden posts, stepped lightly on the…

Cookies

There are many reasons why parents should not leave their children home alone. One reason is that they might try to make cookies out of random ingredients. On one of the days we were all left home alone we got the idea in our heads that we wanted to make home made cookies from scratch. Without a recipe. Marina was in charge, as always, so I’m going to say she was the mastermind of this whole baking experiment. She must have been somewhere around 10 to 12 years old. She was able to reach up into the high shelves and…

An Easter Story

Now that I’ve recovered from this year’s jelly bean and deviled egg induced coma, I am ready to share an Easter story from the past… I’m just going to get the “eew” part of this story out right now, I threw up in church. Ok, not in church but right on the front steps. Here’s what went down: My ex-stepdad was Greek Orthodox Christian and he was somewhat religious, as was my mom, meaning they went to church on the “important” occasions. Which really was only Easter and funerals. The first time we attended an Easter service was pretty intense.…

Turtles

Right now I have a pug and a white kitten. This is the least amount of animals I’ve ever owned and also some of the first pets I’ve had as an adult (we recently lost one pug to kidney cancer). The pets my family has had ranged from cats and dogs to turtles and pigs. We didn’t have a lot of money but we did our best to give them all the best life we could offer.                 One of our, how should I put this, ah yes, our most inventive ways of cleaning out our turtle aquarium makes…

Everyday/All The Time Song & Dance

I haven’t posted anything in a while and I want to keep this blog alive so here is a “quickie”. I have been meaning to make a little video of me performing the Everyday/All The Time Song & Dance. The origins of this little ditty come from an over zealous lecturing ex-stepdad. He would get into these rants, going on and on about how we didn’t do our chores correctly or didn’t follow his directions. In general he just really loved to talk and loved the sound of his own voice. He would start making lists, “One-You didn’t do this,…

Waking Up

I am such a terrible morning person. Even as a kid I wouldn’t want to get out of bed. I would wait until the very last-minute before dragging myself out of bed and throwing myself together in 15 minutes. I still do that toady. Except I try to spend 30 minutes making myself look decent these days. I figure adult women should spend a little more time messing with their hair or something. I feel so bad for my boyfriend, he has to listen to the alarm go off four different times because of my excessive use of the snooze…

Best Fashion Advice

Everyone has a favorite article of clothing that they practically live in. When I was a kid it was probably a cozy t-shirt, for Jessica maybe a cute dress, Marina probably opted for a plaid-grunge-Nirvana-esque thing. When you’re a kid you don’t think about fashion rules. You just grab something comfy or whatever your parents lay out for you. My mom rarely had the time to lay out our clothes; we almost always picked out our outfits unless it was a special occasion. Being kids, we usually went straight for that one favorite article of clothing.                 My mom did…
